The rest of Dorset can wait a while….

You know you’ve arrived in Dorset as soon as you take your first taste of an Isle of Purbeck Brewery beer. Whether it’s the clean, refreshing finish of Solar Power, the peppery hop aroma of Fossil Fuel, the smooth malt flavours of Purbeck IPA or any of the core or seasonal beers on offer, you know you’re experiencing a genuine taste of Dorset.

The award winning Isle of Purbeck Brewery is located in Studland, a coastal village on the opposite side of Poole Harbour best reached via the chain-link ferry from Sandbanks. The brewery itself is right next door to the Bankes Arms, nestling in the Purbeck Hills overlooking the clear, blue sea of Studland Bay and just a short walk from the iconic white sea stacks of Old Harry.

It was the success of the annual Bankes Arms Beer Festival – now in its 22nd year and featuring over 200 real ales and ciders over a three-day event – that prompted Jack and Pippa Lightbown to establish the brewery in 2003. Under the expert guidance of master brewer Dan Thomasson, the first beer, Fossil Fuel, was brewed to resounding success. Today the range has grown to five core beers encompassing a delicious spectrum of styles and tastes and the brewery also produces several seasonal beers as well as its own cider, Purbeck Pommes.

The Isle of Purbeck’s approach to making the beer is pretty straightforward. First of all they make all the beers by hand in the traditional way, making sure that each part of the brew is perfect. Secondly, they don’t cut any corners on ingredients, always using the best that England can provide. And last, but not least, they aim to provide exceptional personal service in the finest traditions of a family-run brewery.
